Introduction: Welcome to Herbology I, a required course for the Doctor of Naturopathy Degree in the School of Naturopathic Medicine & Health Care at Canyon College.

In an article written by D.M. Eisenberg, MD, and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 1998, it was estimated the in 1997 42% of Americans were using some degree of complimentary health care, up form 34% in 1990. It was estimated that there were 629 million visits to Complimentary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) providers (which included Naturopathic Doctors) that same year, outnumbering the number of visits to primary care physicians, estimated at 388 million visits. Total out-of-pocket expenses for complimentary medicine in 1997 was estimated at $27 billion nationwide and is expected to rise on an annual basis.

In light of these statistics, it is evident that more consumers are seeking less toxic treatment options, demanding more control over their medical care and taking more responsibility for their health. Therefore, well-trained health care providers are needed to direct patients in their search for natural health options while guiding them to optimum health and wellness.

Herbal medicine is one of the treatment modalities available to the naturopathic practitioner. Many plant substances are powerful medicines that are effective and safe when used properly. A resurgence of scientific research in Europe and Asia is demonstrating that some plant substances are superior to synthetic drugs in clinical situations.

This introductory course to herbal medicine will cover such topics as the collection, preparation and classification of medicinal herbs. Specific herbs are discussed including their therapeutic properties. This course will help prepare you for NH 757 Herbology II were medicinal herbs are classified by disorders of particular body systems.
