COURSE OVERVIEW:

This is three-semester hour course designed to be completed in ten weeks. Students must complete all required weekly reading assignments prior to completing the case studies. As soon as you receive your textbooks you may begin your course of study. The course schedule and assignments are listed below.

INTRODUCTION:

Welcome to Nutritional Therapeutics, a required course for the Doctor of Naturopathy Degree in the School of Naturopathic Medicine & Health Care at Canyon College. This course will give you an understanding of the etiology of major disease states and the role of nutrition in the prevention and treatment of them. Students should already have an understanding of the biochemistry of nutrition as well the function and metabolism of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients.

Students are required to obtain their own textbooks and are encouraged to acquire the texts as soon as possible in order to have the required reading completed prior to testing.

EXAMINATIONS:

There will be no examinations per se for this course. Proficiency will be evaluated by developing and presenting a nutritional program for the prevention and/or treatment of case studies provided at the end of weeks 5 and 10. Case studies will be worth 2/3rds of your grade. A research paper on the nutritional topic of your choice will worth 1/3rd of your final grade. The research paper topic can cover any area of interest that addresses nutrition and the treatment of illness. Your research topic must be submitted for approval before requesting the case studies in week 5. Email me at nmdphd@canyoncollege.edu prior to the end of weeks 5 and 10 to request case studies. Your research paper must be submitted before requesting the final case studies in week 10. Your research paper must include references and recent studies beyond the required references for this course. A grade of Incomplete will be given if the assignments are not completed on time.

GRADING:

Grades are based on the quality of responses and completeness of presented case studies. The grading scale is as follows:

90-100% = A
80-89% = B
70-79% = C
69% and below = F - Fail

A passing score of 70% is required on all assignments.

  4. Your personal and professional goals upon completion of this course and the ND program at Canyon College.

WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS:

Week 1:
– Acquire course texts.
– Read Part One: General Evaluation and Treatment, pages 3-60 in Textbook of Nutritional Medicine.
– Begin to formulate potential research topic.

Weeks 2-5:
– Read Part Two: Nutritional Treatments for Specific Illnesses in Textbook of Nutritional Medicine; from Acne Rosacea through Gallbladder Disease.
– Read simultaneously the companion sections from Part One: Illnesses and the Effects of Nutrients, Toxic Metals and Environmental Sensitivities in Nutritional Influences on Illness.

Your research paper topic must be submitted and approved by the end of week 5. Email me at nmdphd@canyoncollege.edu to request the case studies. Once you have received the case presentations; reply with a discussion of the possible etiology of the disease state, present a detailed nutritional program (to include prevention and treatment) with an explanation of each of your nutritional and lifestyle recommendations.

Weeks 6-10:
– Read Part Two: Nutritional Treatments for Specific Illnesses in Textbook of Nutritional Medicine; from Glaucoma through Ulcerative Colitis.
– Read simultaneously the companion sections from Part One: Illnesses and the Effects of Nutrients, Toxic Metals and Environmental Sensitivities in Nutritional Influences on Illness.

Your research paper must be submitted by the end of week 10. Submit your research paper as a an email attachment in Word Document format to nmdphd@canyoncollege.edu. Include references and recent studies beyond the required references for this course. Email me at nmdphd@canyoncollege.edu to request the final case studies. Once you have received the case presentations; reply with a discussion of the possible etiology of the disease state, present a detailed nutritional program (to include prevention and treatment) with an explanation of each of your nutritional and lifestyle recommendations.
