COURSE SYLLABUS: Herbology II

Course Title:NH757 - Herbology II
Department: Naturopathic Medicine and Health Care
Instructor: Barry A. Broughton, NMD, Ph.D Naturopathic PhysicianVitaeE-Mail
Introduction: Welcome to Herbology II, a required course for the Doctor of Naturopathy Degree in the School of Naturopathic Medicine & Health Care at Canyon College.
The term “herb” refers to a plant that has medicinal purposes. The World Health Organization estimated that in 1985 about 80% of the world’s population relied of herbs for their primary health care needs. This widespread use of herbal medicines is not restricted to developing countries, as it has been estimated that 70% of all medical doctors in Germany and France regularly prescribe herbal medicines.
During the past 10-20 years there has been an explosion of scientific information concerning plants, crude plant extracts, and various substances from plants as medicinal agents. About 25% of all prescription drugs in the U.S. contain active constituents obtained from plants, i.e. digoxin, colchicine, morphine, codeine and yohimbine to name a few.
Herbal medicine is one of the treatment modalities available to the naturopathic practitioner. Many plant substances are powerful medicines that are effective and safe when used properly. A resurgence of scientific research in Europe and Asia is demonstrating that some plant substances are superior to synthetic drugs in clinical situations.
This advanced course in herbal medicine will cover the medicinal and nutrient value of specific herbs. This is an in-depth study of single herbs and herbal combinations for the treatment of disorders classified by body systems. NH 740 Herbology I is a prerequisite for this course.
