Course Description:

The course focuses on suffixes, prefixes, numbers, amounts, colors, and positions. It also focuses on separate systems of the body: Integumentary System, Respiratory System, Digestive System, Cardiovascular System, and Hematic and Lymphatic System, Urinary System, Male and Female Reproductive System, Nervous System, Endocrine System, Musculoskeletal System, Special Senses, and Medical Specialisties. The course is designed to and deliver in a UNIQUE way to better assist those going into the Medical Billing and Coding area.

Course Outline

Week 1 Chapter 1 - Suffixes
  • Identify common suffixes
  • Categorize common suffixes as noun spellings, verbs, and adjectives
  • Recognize plural forms of terms
  • Understand that suffixes can denote a process: an incision, a visual examination, a surgery, an excision, the process of recording, a surgical reattachment, or a surgical puncture
  • Understand that suffixes can denote pain, excessive bleeding, a disease, a prolapse, an inflammation, an abnormal condition, a fungal condition, a tumor, an enlargement, or an abnormal softening
  • Recognize that suffixes can denote narrowing, expansion, and deficiency; identify suffixes that denote paralysis, dissolution, a flow, a formation, a fracture, and the study of an area.

Week 2 Chapter 2 - Prefixes
  • Identify common prefixes;
  • Categorize common prefixes as denoting degree, time, and position;
  • Understand prefixes used to indicate direction;
  • Recognize prefixes that indicate negation, number, and color; and
  • Identify miscellaneous prefixes.
Chapter 3 – Numbers, Amounts, Colors, and Positions
  • Identify word parts that indicate numbers;
  • Recognize word parts that indicate amounts and positions; and
  • Understand word parts that indicate colors.

Week 3 Chapter 4 – Integumentary System
  • Identify word roots pertaining to the skin;
  • know the three layers of the skin—the epidermis, the dermis, and the subcutaneous layers;
  • Identify the terms for hair and the nails;
  • Name and identify glands in the skin; and
  • Identify several types of drugs associated with skin conditions and treatments.
Chapter 5 – Respiratory System
  • Identify word roots pertaining to the nose;
  • Identify word roots pertaining to the throat and the larynx;
  • Identify word roots pertaining to the trachea and the bronchial passages;
  • Understand the difference between a bronchus and a bronchiole;
  • Identify the word root for the pleural sac;
  • Understand several word roots that identify the lungs and chest cavity;
  • Name and identify the parts of the upper respiratory tract;
  • Name and identify the parts of the lower respiratory tract; and
  • Identify several types of drugs associated with respiratory conditions and treatments.

Week 4 Chapter 6 – Digestive System
  • Identify word roots pertaining to the mouth and oral cavity;
  • Identify word roots pertaining to the tongue and esophagus;
  • Identify word roots pertaining to the stomach;
  • Understand the differences among the main parts of the small intestine-the duodenum, the jejunum, and the ileum;
  • Identify the word part associated with the main parts of the large intestine;
  • Understand the differences among main parts of the colon, including the sigmoid, rectum, and anus;
  • Identify the words parts associated with the main parts of the colon;
  • Identify the word parts for the accessory organs-the gallbladder and the liver;
  • Name and identify the parts of the digestive system; and
  • Identify several types of drugs associated with digestive conditions and treatments.
Chapter 7 – Cardiovascular System
  • Identify word roots pertaining to the heart and the major blood vessels;
  • Know the three layers of the heart: the endocardium, the myocardium, and the epicardium;
  • Identify the word roots associated with the arteries, veins, and blood vessels;
  • Identify the word roots pertaining to blood pressure; and
  • Identify several types of drugs associated with heart conditions and treatments.

Week 5 Chapter 8 – Hematic and Lymphatic System
  • Identify word roots and combining forms denoting the blood;
  • Understand the terms associated with the three different types of blood cells;

  • Identify word roots pertaining to the lymphatic system; and
  • Identify several types of drugs associated with hematic and lymphatic conditions and treatments.

Chapter 10 – Male Reproductive System
  • Identify word roots pertaining to the male reproductive system;
  • Know the sections of the tubes and ducts that transport sperm as it becomes semen;
  • Identify the word roots associated with the parts of the external male genitalia; and
  • Identify several types of drugs associated with male reproductive disorders and treatments.

Week 7 Chapter 11 – Female Reproductive System

Chapter 12 – Nervous System

  • Recognize word parts that identify the spinal cord; and

  • Know the names of the hormones produced by each gland;
  • Understand the purpose/effect of each hormone;

  • Identify several types of drugs associated with endocrine disorders and treatments.
Chapter 14 – Musculoskeletal System
  • Know the difference between the axial and the appendicular skeletons;
  • Identify the various bones and their locations in both the axial and appendicular skeletons;
  • Identify word roots pertaining to bones, the skull, the spine, joints, cartilage, and bone marrow;
  • Identify various muscles;
  • Identify the locations and functions of various muscles;
  • Identify word roots pertaining to muscles, tendons, and fascia; and
  • Identify several types of drugs associated with musculoskeletal disorders and treatments.

Week 9 Chapter 15 – Special Senses

Chapter 16 – Medical Specialties
  • Identify the terms associated with various medical specialties;
  • Identify the terms used to denote specialists in specific medical fields; and
  • Understand the terms used to denote combined medical specialties such as gastroenterology (stomach and intestines specialty).

Week 10 Chapter 17 – Psychiatric Terminology
  • Identify general terms used to describe psychiatric disorders;
  • Know the difference between an organic disorder and a functional disorder;
  • Understand the terms used to describe organic disorder;
  • Understand the terms used to describe functional disorders; and
  • Identify several types of drugs associated with psychiatric disorders and treatments.
