Prerequisite: Master’s degree or higher in public health or concurrent public health master’s studies at this or another suitable institution of your choice.
COURSE OVERVIEW:
I am happy to provide you with information and instructions regarding this Public Health Nursing course. This Community Health Nursing course is formatted as an online class. You have a time limit of four months to complete this certificate program.
This is an exciting course and I am sure you will learn some of the most interesting principles related to the area of Public Health Nursing. After successful completion of the course, you will have a much greater understanding or a refresher of Community Health Nursing, as well as some of the most current and pressing issues of Public Health Nursing. This course is an level course. It is formatted to be self-directed, along with one-on-one mentoring by faculty. As a college level course, you must be prepared to operationalize the concepts learned into the reality of today's health care environment.
This program allows students to progress from Community and Public Health Nursing definitions, to assisting clients at their homes with healthcare, and to advocating national and global changes in public health nursing.
Students follow the course and chapter objectives. Some of the topics/subjects covered include cultural diversity and community-oriented nursing practice; the physically compromised; also assessment and analysis of the community as a client. Learning within NUR484 will provide students with the necessary tools to obtain an educational certificate of completion in Community and Public Health Nursing. Learning within NUR484B will provide students with the necessary tools to apply for the examination to become a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Public/Community Health Nursing.
Students are encouraged to submit questions; and discuss issues and problems in Public and Community Nursing. The readings in the text, the analysis of case studies, our discussions, and your written homework assignments will assist in meeting this broad-based goal.
CLINICAL ROTATION/LAB (optional):
NUR484B students are required to complete a supervised clinical practicum at the location of their choice. This location must be pre-approved (prior to your enrollment) by having the potential preceptor's objectives and goals sent to your NUR484B instructor. ASSIGNMENTS and OBJECTIVES:
The objectives and detailed assignments will be provided upon enrollment. You are responsible for reviewing the objectives. The objectives will guide you in your learning and assist you in knowledge attainment. Textbook memorization is not necessary.
Your reading assignments are self-paced. The reading assignment schedule is as follows:

After completing each module, you may request to take each respective exam.
There will be other assignments for reading, case studies, and discussion throughout the class time.
Please pace your studies so you will complete each module in four weeks.
EXAMINATIONS:
There are four examinations for this course. There will be an objective part and an essay part. The examinations are "open" book. They thoroughly test knowledge in key areas of course content. While open book, they require thought and knowledge of the related content for successful completion.
The examinations are taken "online." When you are ready to take the examinations, please e-mail me directly and request authorization to take your exam. Please make your request at least three business days in advance of your desired date. You will receive instructions to access the examination.
When you are ready to take the examination, access the web site, and complete the examination. Access each exam only once. If you have difficulties, notify Student Support (if applicable) right away. Send a copy of your notice to your instructor. You will receive your score in one - three business days.
GRADING FOR EXAMINATIONS:
The grading scale is as follows:
90% - 100% = A
80% - 89% = B
70% - 79% = C
60% - 69% = D
Below 60% = F
You will receive a letter grade for each module. Your final course grade will be an average of the scores you achieve on all modules.
WHAT TO DO:
Order your text book immediately.
During the first week of the course, please e-mail your instructor and provide your instructor with some basic information about you, including;
1) your contact address (e.g. e-mail address)
2) your goals for this course
3) your overall goals for a career in Public and Community Health Nursing
4) your past and current work experiences
5) any experiences you have had in health care delivery.
Review the chapter objectives in class before reading and studying each chapter.
When instructed, proceed to take a module examination.
Contact your instructor any time you would like to discuss the readings, have questions, require clarifications or further explanations, etc.
Share with your instructor current event issues applicable to the Community and Public Health Nurse, which you identify in the news media, etc. In turn, your instructor may share such information with you for discussion and analysis.
