COURSE OVERVIEW:

I am happy to provide you with information and instructions regarding this course. As you know, you have a time limit to complete this course. The time limit follows the College's policy for Course time completion of a Certificate Program.

This is an exciting course and I am sure you will learn some of the most interesting principles related to the area of Nursing. After successful completion of the course, you will have a much greater understanding or a refresher of Public Health Nursing, as well as some of the most current and pressing issues of Public Health Nursing.

It is formatted to be self-directed, along with one-on-one mentoring by faculty. As your instructor, you and I communicate throughout your time spent in this important study. Communication can be by e-mail system and fax.

You must be prepared to operationalize the concepts learned into the reality of today's nursing environment.

The readings in the text, the analysis of case studies supplied in the text, our discussions, and your weekly assignments will assist in meeting this broad-based goal.

You will find the textbook for this course to be one of the best available for the study of Public Health Nursing. It is packed with information.

Prerequisites:

Applicants must be a licensed registered nurse, or have completed a formal program in nursing and be currently scheduled to take the NCLEX-RN exam, or the appropriate state licensure exam. We do make exceptions based on a student’s prior employment and educational experience.

Summary:

Some of the topics/ subjects covered include; community health nurse in home health and hospice, and family health risks.

Learning in this course will provide students with the necessary foundation to be certified as a Public Health Nurse.

The course is formatted as an online course. There are four modules. There is an exam at the completion of each module. Students are encouraged to submit questions, and discuss issues and problems in Public Health Nursing with the instructor. Reading assignments from the textbooks are assigned with supporting objectives. There are weekly written responses to related questions that are to be turned into the instructor as detailed by the instructor.

EXAMINATIONS:

There are four examinations for this course. There will be an objective part and an essay part. The examinations are "open" book. They thoroughly test knowledge in key areas of course content. While open book, they require thought and knowledge of the related content for successful completion.

All examinations are taken "online." The examinations are accessed through the web site for Canyon College. When you are ready to take the examinations, please e-mail me directly and request authorization to take your exam. You will receive in turn an ID and password to access the examinations.

When you are ready to take the examinations, access the web site, and complete the examination. Access each exam only once. If you have difficulties, notify your instructor or the administration right away. You will receive your score from me in approximately two business days.

Please pace your studies so you will complete the certification program according to Canyon College's deadline for Certificate Programs.

GRADE ASSIGNMENT FOR EXAMINATIONS:

You will receive a letter grade, based on your over all score achievement. The grading scale is as follows:

90% - 100% = A
80% - 89% = B
70% - 79% = C
60% - 69% = D
Below 60% = F

You will receive a letter grade for each module. Your final course grade will be an average of the scores you achieve on all modules.

I will e-mail you your score and letter grade for each of the examinations.

READING ASSIGNMENTS:

Your reading assignments are self-paced.

Module 1:
Chapters 1 through 9 of your textbook.

Module 2:
Chapters 10-23.

Module 3:
Chapters 24-39.

Module 4:
Chapters 40-46.

After completing each module, you may request to take each respective exam.

There will be other assignments for reading, case studies, and care plans throughout the class time.

REVIEW OF OBJECTIVES:

You are responsible for reviewing the objectives and key terms (provided at the beginning of each chapter in your textbook), prior to reading and studying the chapter. The objectives and key terms will guide you in your learning and assist you in knowledge attainment.

WHAT TO DO:
  1. Order your text book immediately.
  1. Review the chapter objectives in class before reading and studying each chapter.
  1. When instructed, proceed to take the midterm examination
  1. When instructed, proceed to take the final examination
  1. During the first week of the course, please e-mail your instructor and provide your instructor with some basic information about you, including;
1) your contact address (eg e-mail address)
2) your goals for this course
3) your overall goals for a career in Public Health Nursing
4) your past and current work experiences
5) any experiences you have had in health care delivery.
  1. Contact your instructor any time you would like to discuss the readings, have questions, require clarifications or further explanations, etc.
  1. Share with your instructor current event issues applicable to the Public Health Nurse which you identify in the news media, etc. In turn, your instructor may share such information with you for discussion and analysis.
