Course description:
An exploration of the background and nature of drug abuse, including illicit, prescription and over the counter drugs. Psychological and physiological effects will be studied in detail, as well as social and legal responses to the problem.

Course objectives:
At the completion of the class, students will be able to:

A. Identify and analyze the social and popular cultural trends that support and encourage the use and abuse of drugs.

B. Identify and analyze historical trends significant to the development of drug use and abuse.

C. Describe the methods of drug administration.

D. Define and explain an altered state of consciousness and analyze its positive and negative ramifications for society and the individual user.

E. To describe the use of various licit and illicit substances and their physiological and psychological effects on individuals.

F. To list the various methods of interviewing and assessment used to determine the extent and type of a drug problem.

G. To examine the methods of treatment used for drug problems and their negative and positive attributes.

Exams will be each approximately 150 questions, both true-false and multiple choice in nature. The final will be comprehensive, and review earlier material, although not necessarily ask the same questions. In addition, approximately 80% of the material will be found in the book, with the remaining 20% coming from the lectures.
