Brief Overview:

In order to become effective leaders of learning in a diversified society, prospective teachers must be able to understand educational psychology. This courses will explore theory and research in the field of educational psychology with an emphasis on child development, learning, motivation, at-risk students, and classroom management. This class is frequently a requirement for students pursuing licensure as a teacher.

Course Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Apply learning theories to classroom situations.
  2. Examine the importance of the psychology of the individual to the development of self- esteem, cooperative learning, individual differences, motivation and learning styles.
  3. Describe the relationships of teachers, parents, and students that lead to a productive learning environment.
  4. Articulate their own beliefs about education and the role of educational psychology.

Course Requirements:

1. Before beginning the course, e-mail your instructor with the following information:

2. Read each chapter thoroughly, noting any vocabulary that is unfamiliar.

3. Complete the self-checks as they appear in the text. These are to help you know when you have mastered the material in the chapter and are for your information only.

4. Complete the self-assessment at the end of each chapter. Including each question, e-mail your instructor with your responses weekly. These are to be done according to the outline listed below. These count 10 points each for a total of 110 points.

Tests:

Both Test #1 and #2 contain objective, multiple-choice questions. You will need to log onto the test portion of this course. The instructor will authorize your doing this when the appropriate chapters have been completed; e-mail your instructor when you are ready to complete the tests. The tests will be self-grading and untimed. Each of the two tests count 100 points toward your final grade.
Grading for testing:
A = 90 - 100
B = 80 - 89
C = 70 - 79
D = 60 - 69
F = Less than 60


Final Exam:

Carefully review the course readings and identify the five most important ideas or concepts you have gained or developed from your work in this course. Rank these five ideas from the most to the least valuable and explain why you view each of these as important. Write three to five paragraphs in your justification for each of the five ideas you have selected. Then choose ten minor points which were significant new learnings for you and write a paragraph about each of these and explain their significance. This is to be typed and E-mailed to the instructor, pasted into an e-mailed message (not as an attachment) by the end of the 8th week of class. Grade will be reduced one letter for each week the exam is late.
Correct spelling and grammar are required; be sure to use spelling and grammar check before submitting! The final exam is worth 100 points.

About Your Instructor

Dr. Snyder is an Associate Professor in the Counseling and Human Services program in the School of Education at the University of Colorado - Colorado Springs. Her doctorate is in Educational Leadership - Counseling (1992) from the University of Central Florida, with a focus on counseling - both school and mental health issues. She is a nationally certified counselor and a licensed professional counselor in Colorado. She has been both a public school teacher and counselor prior to her 8 years in higher education. Research interests include raising levels of consciousness among students, examining the developmental process and how it effects all of life's stages and various aspects of expressive arts therapy.

Dr. Snyder is an internationally recognized presenter on various topics that range from play therapy to counseling older adults to creating teamwork within individual school systems. She is active in professional organizations at the local, state, and national levels, holding several offices and providing leadership for humanistic education and development.

Dr. Snyder describes herself as a dynamic teacher, transpersonally spiritual, the mother of three grown children and intensely interested in mentoring students and developing solid relationships of all kinds. She believes in living life passionately and encourages students to discover how they might achieve their full potential in life.
