GENERAL COURSE DESCRIPTION: Developmental psychology is designed to promote students' understanding of the process by which people become someone different while remaining in many aspects the same. This process, called human development, exposes our inherited structures to a lifetime of experiences. Our task in this course is to gain a better understanding of human development by achieving the course objectives:

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
  1. Know the important aspects of developmental research and some of the theoretical explanations of the developmental process.
  1. Understand the relationship between heredity and environment as they form the foundations of human development.
  1. Understand the developmental processes that occur during the prenatal and neonatal periods.
  1. Understand the developmental tasks accomplished during the first two years of life.
  1. Understand the developmental skills attained by children between the ages of two and six.
  1. Understand the advances in cognitive, moral, and social development occurring in late childhood, ages seven to twelve.
  1. Understand the crises and their effects on the individual in various developmental stages throughout out the lifespan
  1. Understand the developmental challenges of adolescence.
  1. Understand the developmental processes associated with the understanding and acceptance of death.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Complete four examinations. Exam 1 will cover Chapters 1-5, Exam 2 will cover Chapters 6-10, and Exam 3 will cover Chapters 11-16 and Exam 4 will cover Chapters 16-21. Each exam is worth 100 points. The exams will measure your knowledge of the material covered in your text. I will post study guides to help you prepare for the exams. Each exam is timed. The time allotted for each is 90 minutes. Going beyond the allotted time will result in your losing points from the exam. For each 10 minutes that you are over time (up to 30 minutes) you will lose 5% of your score. After 30 minutes, you will lose an additional 1% point for each minute that you are over. Maximum time allowed for each exam is 135 minutes (2 1/4 hours). After 135 minutes, no points will be awarded for the exam.
  1. Complete three projects - - You will be required to complete three projects during the course. The projects are designed to measure how well you are able to understand and apply the material presented in the text. Specific requirements for each project are listed in the assignments section of the classroom. The general requirements are listed below. Also see the general instructions posted in the assignments section for a discussion on how to write up your projects.
  1. Naturalistic Behavioral Observation - Observe a child under the age of ten in a natural setting. Prepare and submit a report of your observations. See the classroom for instructions and the rubric that will be used to evaluate your paper.
  1. Interview - Conduct an interview and prepare a written report on an adolescent. . See the classroom for instructions and the rubric that will be used to evaluate your paper.
  1. Research Report - Write a short paper on a current research issues in adult development. See the classroom for instructions and the rubric that will be used to evaluate your paper.
  1. Course Evaluation: The number of points you earn in the course will determine your final grade. Points will be awarded as follows:
