Weeks 7 - 8

Observe a child or adolescent. Interview the care giver and/or the subject if at an appropriate age. Use the following criteria:
A. Your subject should be at least 7 years old, this allows you to look at the subjects history and to use theories for the segments of the subjects which s/he has experienced to analyze present fuctioning

B. Do not use a family member or a close friend as a subject. Because it is difficult or impossible to be objective about a loved one, the quality of your report would be compromised as there is a tendency to miss, overemphasize, or misinterpret information and impressions.

C. Use several theories at least one stage theorist, e.g. Freud, Erikson, Piaget to analyze present development based on past experience. Be sure to include all stages which the child has experienced.

D. If information is not available from the care giveror if it seems inaccurate, you can use the behaviors which are presently manifested to hypothesize about what happened to the child at an earlier age. For example if the care giver indicates that the child had an uneventful and healthy life until approximately three years of age, but you observe that he is fearful and compulsive, you would describe the behaviors you observe, refer to appropriate theories and theorize what might have occurred based on the subjects present behavior.

E. The following format must be used:
1. Present biographic information
2. Present relevant theory
3. Analyze present behavior in terms of theory and the impact of past experience on present behavior and fuctioning.
