Course Objective:
This course is designed to give the student an understanding in the ethical standards, issues and situations faced in the counseling profession.

Course Purpose:
This course will look at the need for ethics and ethical standards in counseling for professionals and the clients they serve. This course will make students aware of potential problems and dilemas in practice, legal issues and differences within the profession between individuals in the counseling field.

Method: Ethics for Psychologists will require:
1. Read assignments
2. E-mail correspondence one on one with the instructor listing:

a - general information about yourself

b - your objective in taking this course

c - your short term and long term goals

3. Message board participation for individual/group questions & discussions
4. Class room (chat room) discussions are also possible if desired
5. Midterm and final exams - each worth 40% of your grade. (No Essay questions)
6. Final paper on an ethical issue - 20% of your grade (20 points)

Final paper: The final paper will be due no later than week 6 of this course. It will address an issue of your choice from the text or another of your choice with preapproval from the instructor. Topic will not effect grade. You will discuss the pros and cons of the issue using at least 3 other ethics sources. This paper will be done in APA format - if possible. Reference list must be included. References can be articles from professional journals or publications; other text or books; legal books, organizational code of ethics, state licensing ethics, newspaper or magazine articles referring to your issue topic. Paper should be 3 - 12 pages not including reference page. Grade will not be determined by length of paper but by quality of thought and information.

Suggestion: Know if your state has licensing for counselors and if there are ethical standards which are applicable to you. States vary in licensing.

Remember: Your paper must be in by week 6 in order for review and grading. If it is late 5% each week will be deducted an no paper will be accepted after the 8th week.
