Course description:
This is a graduate course focusing on approaches in marriage and family therapy. It will start with a review of assessment as well as evaluation for therapy. Between the required text and the lectures, students will gain an appreciation for the complexity of Marriage and Family Therapy.

Course objectives:
At the completion of the class, students will be able to:
  1. Identify diverse approaches in Marriage and Family Therapy.
  2. Be able to conduct an assessment and evaluation to determine readiness for Marriage or Family Therapy.
  3. Describe differences for a minimum of three approaches to Marriage and Family Therapy.
  4. Define and explain preferred approach for you and your style of counseling and why.
  5. Complete a five page paper on a research topic that synthesizes theory and practice. Recommended topics will be provided and students will email their proposal no later than the fourth week of class. Paper is due in the seventh week of class.
  6. Complete exams for proficiency with a minimum of a passing grade.

Exams will be each approximately 140 questions, multiple choice in nature. In addition, there will be about 60 points gained through the completion of essay questions. This portion of the exam will be taken after completion of the first part, consisting of the multiple choice questions. Approximately 80% of the material will be found in the book, with the remaining 20% coming from the lectures.

The paper is to be five standard pages in length, following an APA format. No larger than a 12 point font is permitted. Topics for papers will be proposed by the instructor and students will then finalize their topic by the fourth week. All papers are due in the seventh week, students will not be permitted to take the final exam until a paper has been received by the instructor.
