Course Objectives:
To familiarize students in a graduate level psychology curriculum with issues, trends, techniques, methodologies, and theoretical orientations related to adolescent clients and their families. Upon completion of this course, students will have a basic understanding to effectively work with adolescents and their families and to provide these clients with educational and support resources.

Methods:
The means and methods applicable to this course are as follows:
a. assigned readings and lectures
b. successful completion of objective tests on the reading materials.
c. successful completion and submission of one small research paper
d. e-mail correspondence, chat, and verbal discussions
e. successful completion of a website resource project
Grading System:
  1. Tests: 400 Total Points (50 points each test)
  2. Research Paper: 100 Total Points
  3. Website Resource Project: 100 Total Points
  4. Participation in Correspondences: 100 Total Points

Weekly Activities:

Weeks 1 and 2:
  1. Begin reading the Adolescent Development Text (Chapters 1-4) and prepare for open chat discussion.
  2. Begin reading Ophelia Speaks, Part I.
Week 3:
  1. Continue reading Adolescent Development (Chapters 5-7).
  2. Read Ophelia, Part II.
  3. Engage in chat discussion concerning readings to date.
  4. Respond to "Mirrors" by Charlotte Cooper, p.7 of Opheilia by writing a 2 page essay discussing your opinions and reactions to the reading and offering helpful insight from a potential counselor / therapist perspective.
Week 4:
  1. Continue Reading Adolescent Development (Chapters 6-9)
  2. Read Ophelia, Part III.
  3. Engage in chat discussion concerning readings to date.
  4. Respond to "Stepping Stone" by Amy Jean Salamon. p. 116 of Ophelia by writing a letter to the article's author and offering a counselor's perspective, paying specific attention to her final 3 lines in the piece.
  5. Begin Midterm Exam: In a two page essay, utilizing information gathered from your readings to date, respond to the following statement: "An adolescent has specific emotional, psychological, sociological, and physiological needs that should be addressed through a limited array of theoretical orientations. In theory, humanistic, behavioral, and cognitive-behavioral orientations are most efficient whereas psychoanalytical and transactional analysis orientations are inefficient."
Week 5:
  1. Continue Reading Adolescent Development
  2. Read Ophelia, Parts IV and V.
  3. Turn in Midterm Exam via Email Attachment
  4. Complete Website Assignment
  5. Begin Research Project (See Specific Guidelines.)
  6. Engage in further chat discussion.
Week 6:
  1. Complete All Readings
  2. Respond to "Crush" by Mireille Hyde p.180 of Ophelia by creating a 2 page dialogue that might take place in a counseling session between yourself and Ms. Hyde. Be sure to let Ms. Hyde's part of the dialogue reflect the feelings she displays in her diary entry, and be sure to let your portion of the dialogue reflect your knowledge of theoretical orientation as it may apply to adolescents in this therapeutic scenario. In other words, create the dialogue to reflect a realistic exchange between adolescent client and well-rounded therapist.
  3. Engage in chat discussion.
Week 7:
  1. Complete and Submit Final Draft of Research Project.
  2. Begin Final Exam by responding to the following scenario: "A 16 year old boy is caught with drugs and weapons in the trunk of his car at school and, through the judicial process, is ultimately sent to you for counseling. Review of the police report indicates that, upon his arrest, he was confrontational with police and other authorities, taunting them to "call my old man and he'll come down here and shove these guns right up your ass." Further information reveals that his father was not available to police because he lives out of state, but that his mother and live-in boyfriend have fluctuated between semi-supportive and flagrantly resistant to cooperating with police and caseworkers throughout the process. The boy's grades are D- to F, his parents have been divorced for two years, he has never been to counseling, and this is the first time he has been in trouble with the law." In your response, discuss the intuitions that you may have going into your counseling sessions and display your working knowledge of at least one theoretical orientation by developing a treatment plan based on techniques specific to that orientation.
