Course Description

This course is designed as an introduction to deviant behavior. Progression through this class will acquaint students with subjects like intelligence, motivation, development, abnormal psychology, trauma, brain damage, and various stressors as a part of interpreting deviant behavior. The relevance to diagnosis and treatment plans will be emphasized.

Students will develop the following:
  1. An understanding of the development of deviant behavior from a psychological perspective including different schools of thought.
  2. An awareness of the relationship of physiological functions to emotional development.
  3. An introductory review of the scientific method and research techniques used by forensic psychologists.
  4. A familiarity with reliable sources of psychological testing information.
  5. The ability to apply scientific principles of investigation and epidemiology to everyday questions and problems.
  6. A better understanding of self and others.
  7. An understanding of terminology used in forensic psychology.
  8. An awareness of vocational opportunities in psychology.
  9. Abstract recognition of qualities which patients’ project.
  10. Insights which enhance understanding of the relevance of psychology to other social sciences.
Attendance Policy

Regular attendance is essential to maximum learning and academic success. This means staying in touch weekly by email and by telephone as required. The records and registration office at the University are informed of excessive silences. Excused absences such as illness or emergency must be reported to the instructor. If you can not be in touch by email, please notify Dr. Wolford.

Reading the Text

All students are expected to read the assigned chapters. An evaluation of reading and comprehension will be reflected in test scores and email responses. All students are expected to be prepared to participate in email conversations demonstrating thoughtful preparation.

A 5 page paper, in APA style (see www.apa.org) on each text.

Zero Tolerance Plagiarism and Cheating Policy

Plagiarism and other forms of cheating may result in failure of the assignment and/or the failure of the course.

Examinations

Examinations are administered during the semester according to the students’ progress. All examinations are drawn from the required text. During the course of grading, an exam will not be dropped from the total points possible.

Mid-term will consist of one essay question on each of the first nine Chapters.

Final Exam will consist of one essay question on each of the remaining five Chapters and 4 essay questions requiring critical thinking skills based on vignettes related to Forensic Psychology.

I do not write ‘trick question’. All material is straight forward and clear.

Please use Masters level writing skills. If you have trouble writing, use a proof reader.

Special Assignment

Write a 5 page (or more as you wish) paper in APA format, not including the cover or bibliography on the increase of violence in the domestic, national and global theaters using the text book as a resource. You may focus on a specific type of violence if you choose. Additional resources as needed can be found on the Internet. You must cite at least five different sources.
