Course Objective:

Upon completion of this course the student will have an understanding of the basic skills of becoming a supervisor, transcultural supervision, management styles, dynamic of groups teams and peer groups, supervising groups, teams and networks, mapping, and other skills for the role of a supervisor and working with others.


Course Purpose:

This course will look at basic skills as a supervisor and as a team member to provide efficient quality services to the clients requiring rehabilitation services. This course will make you aware of supervision skills and the need for teamwork with others to promote the success of the client. It will also introduce you to the styles and needs to become a productive professional supervisor.

Assignments: All assignments are to be e-mailed to the instructor via Canyon College E-mail
  1. Order the appropriate textbook; contact Instructor.
  2. Write the 1st Self-analysis and e-mail to instructor. Keep a copy for yourself.
  3. Read the assignments prior to the Midterm exam..
  4. Contact instructor the week before taking the Midterm exam to access exam.
  5. Take the Midterm exam; continue with reading assignments
  6. Complete reading assignment; send 2nd Self-analysis to instructor
  7. Notify instructor when you want to take the final at least one (1) ahead for access to exam.
  8. Take the final exam.

Please Note: My teaching "office hours" are on Tue., Wed., and Thur. I will answer all e-mails then. Do not get upset if you don't hear from me until the office hours. If I do log on at any other time I will answer any e-mails that are there. So if you take an exam over a weekend you will probably not have the results until the next office hours.

Self-Analysis:

1st Analysis: 20 points
Send the instructor information about yourself; purpose for taking this class; professional goal(s); how you see yourself as a supervisor and a team member. List two (2) strengths and two (2) weaknesses you may have in the area of Supervision and Team work. This information should include all areas and be brief. It should be no longer than one (1) page.

2nd Analysis: 20 points
Review your first analysis. Re-evaluate yourself. List any changes you may have had since taking this class. Be sure to include your listed strengths and weaknesses, are they the same?

Reading Assignments:

Week 1: Chapters 1,2,3,4, 5, (due: 1st Self-analysis) Week 2: Chapters 6,7
Week 3: Chapter 8
Week 4: Midterm exam - 30 points (Part I & II)
Week 5: Chapters 9, 10
Week 6: Chapters 11, 12
Week 7: Chapters 13, 14 (due: 2nd Self-analysis)
Week 8: Final Exam - 30 points (Part III & IV)

Extra Credit: A possible 10 points can be earned. Extra credit will be offered by the instructor for students who receive "C" or less on their exam. Each student may have a different assignment for the Extra Credit points.
