COURSE OBJECTIVES:

This course provides a foundation for services and decision-making through examination of client entitlements, eligibility, advocacy and protections. Health care law, public policy, ethics and confidentiality are discussed in this course. The obligations and impact of mandated reporting are also explored. This graduate level course will further examine the psychosocial issues that are ever present when performing rehabilitation work and additionally explore the historical and legislative evolution of this field.

The textbook utilized for this class is Counseling in the Rehabilitation Process, Community Services for Mental and Physical Disabilities, Grady, G., Martin, E., & Hardy, R. Charles C. Thomas Company, Springfield, IL, Second Edition, 1999.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

There will be two examinations given in this course, one a Midterm

Examination given on Week Four and the other a Final Examination given on Week Eight. Each of the examinations will be in an essay format and will cover the materials that have been presented in the text. Specifically the Midterm Examination will cover materials presented in the text in Chapters One through Chapter Eight. The Final Examination will cover the materials presented in Chapters Nine through Chapter Seventeen of the text. It should be noted that the final examination in this course is not a comprehensive examination and will only cover the materials contained in Chapters Nine through Chapter Seventeen. The student must complete each examination no later than the last day of the week on Week Four and Week Eight respectively. The student must notify the instructor via email on Week Four and also on Week Eight that they are ready to sit for examinations and then permission will be granted to gain access to the respective examinations.

Additionally the course will contain four written assignments, which will test students knowledge of each section of the text and also provide excellent study materials for the examinations. It is further hoped that by completing the written assignments that the student will become familiar with the types of questions that will be presented in each examination.
