SECTION I: INTRODUCTION


AVAILABILITY: Dr. Majersky is available to speak individually with each student to ensure adequate understanding of course requirements and to offer assistance and suggestions. The best times to call are Monday through Friday, 5:30 - 7:00 p.m., EST or on weekends.

Dr. Charlene Majersky has been involved in the health care industry for nearly 10 years. Her Doctorate degree is in Health Care Administration from Capella University and her Master's degree in Public Health with a specialty in Community Health Development & Education is from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. In addition to being a member of the Canyon College faculty, she is a member of the faculty of National University in CA and Southern Illinois University in IL.

INTRODUCTION:
The quality of an organization’s top leaders greatly impacts its overall effectiveness and ability to continuously adapt to change. Organizational Leadership (RS560) is an eight week graduate level online course that analyzes leadership within the context of organizational structure in driving the organization forward; examines a combined contextual approach to organizational leadership coupled with a critical analysis of the social, cognitive, and affective dynamics that underscore that leadership; reviews an interdisciplinary approach that extracts from the work in the areas of management and psychology; and prepares the student to deal with problems encountered by leaders and the required behaviors, attributes, and outcomes needed to lead organizations effectively.

On a macro-level, the first half of this course will focus on the nature of organizational leadership and the performance imperatives facing organizational leaders – cognitive, personal, political, technological, financial, and staffing. On a micro-level, the second half of this course will focus specifically on the health care organization in the new millennium – its vision, values, and leadership.

SECTION II: COURSE POLICIES
AND PROCEDURES


COURSE STANDARDS:
The Canyon College Adult Teaching/Learning Model specifies that in preparation for every course, students will satisfy all prerequisites. During the course itself, students achieve certain specified learning outcomes. All performance assessment depends upon the accomplishment of these outcomes. Students are graded on achievement, rather than on effort.

The College trusts each student to maintain high standards of honesty and ethical behavior. All assignments submitted in fulfillment of course requirements must be the student's own work. All assignments are meant to be individual efforts.

It is assumed that students will perform professionally in preparing work required for this class. All papers must be submitted on the due date and are to be typed, spell-checked and grammar-checked, submitted double-spaced and prepared in appropriate format.

All homework and assignments must be completed to earn a grade other than a "W", "WF", or "I".

COURSE POLICIES:
On-Line Participation: This course is offered on-line, over the Internet, which allows students to participate at any time, from any location. Because of this flexibility, it is important to plan your time carefully. You should expect to expend a minimum of four hours per class week on-line -- the same amount of time you'd spend in a physical classroom. You'll be sending and receiving E-mail, performing on-line research and participating in Web explorations and "tours," and possibly interacting socially and professionally with classmates.

A class week is defined as the period of time between Monday and Sunday. The first week begins the first day of the semester and ends midnight the following Sunday. Assignments scheduled for completion during a class week should be completed by Saturday of the week assigned. Writing assignments and formal papers should be completed and successfully submitted, or postmarked, so that they are in the instructor's hands on the due date. NOTE: Because this is an online course designed to get feedback on assignments to you directly via Internet, you should make prior arrangements before submitting a paper via fax or the postal service. If you ever have problems transmitting your assignments, telephone the instructor immediately, and the problem will be solved. The student is to understand that unless the instructor authorizes a time extension, all assignments received past its due date will receive a grade score penalty. The student will receive a confirmation of receipt from the instructor within 72 hours of sending the assignment. If the instructor has not replied within 72 hours to the student, it is the student's responsibility to follow-up on all submitted assignments and email messages sent to the instructor.

Email-Homework: Homework must be submitted not later than Saturday of the week assigned. Late homework will receive a grade penalty. Homework not turned in by the due date, but which is turned in no more then 7 days late, will receive a 14% penalty for each day late. Homework not received within 7 days of the due date will not be scored and will receive a zero. No work received after the last Saturday of the online term will be scored. Please be sure to email all homework assignments to Charlene Majersky, Ph.D. at charlene@canyoncollege.edu.

Discussion Assignments: Discussion (student classroom participation) work must be posted in the classroom not later than Saturday of the week assigned. Late discussion thread postings by a student will receive a 14% penalty for each day late after the due date up to 7 days. The required discussion posting(s) not posted after 7 days of there due date will not be scored and will receive the grade of zero. No class-work posted after the last Saturday of the online term will be scored.

Absentee Policy: Student(s) who fail to participate in the classroom during a course week will be deemed absent for that week. The absence will be annotated as absent unexcused (AU), unless the instructor has been informed beforehand and deemed the absence as absent excused (AE). The instructor shall report all absences to the main campus as required.

A student who has not participated for 14 consecutive days regardless if the absences were deemed AU or AE shall be recommended for administrative withdrawal to the main campus. The main campus shall make recommendations to the instructor as to what action if any will be taken. Emails sent to the instructor during a "course week" without actual classroom participation will not count as classroom participation or attendance. This will be scored and annotated accordingly AU or AE. In a traditional classroom just because a student contacts the instructor and is excused from a scheduled class meeting does not mean the student is given credit for participation or attendance. The student is still annotated as AU or AE. The online classroom shall be no different in this respect. It is the instructor's sole discretion as to what he/she shall consider AU or AE.

Ground Rules for On-line Participation: Students should use e-mail for private messages to the instructor and other students and for weekly discussions, instructor messages, classroom participation and attendance. Students are to send all email messages or homework to the instructor's email address at charlene@canyoncollege.edu.
  1. Students are expected to complete (4 - 5) hours per week of appropriate online activities, including sending/receiving E-mail and navigating and conducting research over the World Wide Web.
  2. All students will participate using conventions of on-line etiquette, which include courtesy to all users. (Note: Typing in all caps is the same as shouting at your classmates and is considered rude.)
  3. We may also have on-line real time conferences from time-to-time.
  4. Students may get assistance with computer-related problems through the college and instructor.
  5. Students will submit papers as MS Word, Word Perfect, or text files ASCII or binary files uploaded to the computer and routed to the instructor as an email "ATTACHMENT", preferably in MS WORD FORMAT, and virus free. All email messages and ATTACHMENTS will include the student's: FULL NAME, EMAIL ADDRESS, COURSE TITLE, and ASSIGNMENT TITLE.
  6. Assigned papers will be submitted via the postal service or fax only if arrangements are made with the instructor beforehand.

Individual Student Responsibilities:

MID-TERM AND FINAL EXAMS:

Defining the Final Exam: having successfully completed Week Five through Week Eight, by completing all the reading material, discussion questions, queries, and the final paper with a passing grade is defined as equivalent to successfully completing the Final Exam for RS 560.

SECTION III: COURSE ASSIGNMENTS


ACTIVITIES:

WEEK ONE: This week will focus on the nature of organizational leadership, conceptual imperatives for executives, and leadership, and mental models.

  1. Required Reading: Chapters 1-3 in “The Nature of Organizational Leadership: Understanding the Performance Imperatives Confronting Today’s Leaders”
  2. Respond to Discussion Questions (5 points):
    1. Compare and contrast the authors’ four arguments relative to defining the elements of organizational leadership to your own definition of organizational leadership. Do you agree or disagree with the authors’ definition?
    2. The authors identified seven performance imperatives for organizational leadership. Select two and discuss what it is and its effects on organizational effectiveness.
  3. Query #1 (10 points): Write a 3-page paper identifying who you believe is an effective leader, why you selected him or her, what leadership qualities does s/he emulate, and what have you learned from his or her leadership style.
  4. Begin to work on your final paper (25 points), "The Advancement of the Student's Leadership Potential”, which is due on Week #8:
    Based on the student’s assessment and class assignments, the student shall:

WEEK TWO: This week will focus on behavioral complexity and social intelligence, social capital and organizational leadership, corporate control, and leadership, vision, and organizational effectiveness.

  1. Required Reading: Chapters 4-7 in “The Nature of Organizational Leadership: Understanding the Performance Imperatives Confronting Today’s Leaders”
  2. Respond to Discussion Questions (5 points):
    1. Define the term “social capital” and compare and contrast this term with “human capital.”
    2. Discuss the common characteristics from the multitude of definitions of vision.

WEEK THREE: This week will focus on the CEO and top management team, executive characteristics, compensation systems, and firm performance, and identifying, assessing, and selecting senior leaders.

  1. 1. Required Reading: Chapters 8-10 in “The Nature of Organizational Leadership: Understanding the Performance Imperatives Confronting Today’s Leaders”
  2. Respond to Discussion Questions (5 points):
    1. Explain the responsibilities of the CEO and discuss how the nature of CEO work is different from that of leaders at other levels.
    2. Seven leadership imperatives and related competencies were identified for senior leaders. Select two leadership imperatives, explain what they are, state related issues, and discuss the related competencies.
  3. Query #2 (10 points): Write a 3-page paper analyzing an issue in the news regarding leadership that was either positive or negative. Discuss what you, as a leader, would do differently.

WEEK FOUR: This week will focus on leader training and development, assessment of leadership outcomes, implications of organizational leadership, and leadership research.

  1. Required Reading: Chapters 11-14 in “The Nature of Organizational Leadership: Understanding the Performance Imperatives Confronting Today’s Leaders”
  2. Respond to Discussion Questions (5 points):
    1. Explain the 3 major components of the leadership development process.
    2. Compare and contrast “trait-based approaches” to “behavior-based approaches”, and provide an example of what each approach is.

WEEK FIVE: This week will focus on health care vision and values, health care leadership challenges, and drivers of change in the new millennium.
  1. Required Reading: Chapters 1-3 in “Health Care in the New Millennium: Vision, Values, and Leadership”
  2. Respond to Discussion Questions (5 points):
    1. Discuss the leadership challenges in health care with respect to politics, managed care, hospitals and health systems, physicians, and the pharmaceutical industry.
    2. Identify and explain the key factors, which underlie the increased degree of consumerization in health care.
  3. Query #3 (10 points): Write a 3-page paper comparing and contrasting your textbook learnings to date with what you would like to accomplish in your present or future role as a leader.

WEEK SIX: This week will focus on the challenges of change, managed care, socialized medicine, socialized insurance, and mandatory health insurance.
  1. Required Reading: Chapters 4-6 in “Health Care in the New Millennium: Vision, Values, and Leadership”
  2. Respond to Discussion Questions (5 points):
    1. According to Morrison, compare and contrast health vs. health care.
    2. Identify and explain the four phases of managed care.

WEEK SEVEN: This week will focus on consumers and strategies for the survival of managed care.

  1. Required Reading: Chapters 7-9 in “Health Care in the New Millennium: Vision, Values, and Leadership”
  2. Respond to Discussion Questions (5 points):
    1. Discuss the directions that Medicare, Medicaid, and employers will most likely take over the next decade.
    2. Discuss the reasons for increased medical costs and how we, as leaders, can effectively manage medical cost inflation.
  3. Query #4 (10 points): Select an article from a scholarly journal relating to leadership and write a 3-page paper, including a synopsis, and discuss what you have learned about leadership from reading this article.

WEEK EIGHT: This week will focus on health care providers, strategy innovations in health care, health care in the new millennium, and the key leadership steps involved in creating the future for health care in the U.S.

  1. Required Reading: Chapters 10-13 in “Health Care in the New Millennium: Vision, Values, and Leadership”
  2. Use this last week to finalize your final paper (25 points). Please send a copy of your final paper by Saturday of Week #8.
