Course Objective:
Upon completion of this course, the student will have an understanding of both attending to the
clients' personal problems and resolving social issues that will prevent these problems from
occurring in the first place. This course will also focus on the importance of the social work
profession maintaining a balance between two major functions; which are, helping people to interact
more effectively with the world around them and working to change that world to prevent problems
and improve the quality of life for all.
Course Purpose:
This course is designed to help the student appreciate the relevance of social work to today's
social issues. Far from being on the periphery of critical events that shape the quality of
life for people in this society, social workers are on the front lines, developing social
programs that are responsive to such human needs as homelessness, poverity, family breakup,
mental illness, physical and mental disabilities, alcohol and substance abuse, and domestic
violence. This course will attempt to provide a general overview of these issues and many other
social problems that may be experienced in the profession of Social Work.

E-mail correspondence one on one with instructor at least once during the eight week course.
