Exploring Human Behavior & the Social Environment, (1/e), 1996, Furr, LeRoy Allen: Allyn & Bacon Publishers. ISBN #: 0131487272

Course Description: This is an introductory HBSE course dealing with the interface of human beings and the social environment in which they live. This course covers human developmental stages from birth to death, human diversity, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and various aspects of the family.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

Examinations: There are two exams a student must successfully complete during this course. Both the midterm and final exams are essay-type tests and must be completed according to the instructions located in the course site online. Each exam has three essay questions related to student reading assignments in the text.

Course Schedule: Since enrollment in this course is open, students are expected to complete the following assignments prior to taking either the midterm or final exams:
Reading Assignments: Chapters 1, 2, 3. 4, 5, 6 in text

Exam: Midterm exam on chapters 1-6 at end of week 4

Reading Assignments: Chapters 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14

Exam: Final exam on chapters 7-14 at end of week 8

Student Participation: Although this course is completed by independent study, it is important that each student maintain contact with the instructor throughout the duration of the course. I would like at least one weekly progress report emailed to me (jp2996@canyoncollege.edu). This report doesn't have to contain much information, just the progress you've made in your reading, questions you may have, etc.

Students will also need to schedule one weekly chat with me. This chat will take place in the text chatroom in the online course. This chat is basically to make sure you're not having problems with reading assignments and to see if you have questions about course content.

Students are expected to complete all coursework within 8-9 weeks. If circumstances prevent a student from completing coursework within 8-9 weeks, the student will need to contact me in order to discuss a schedule which will allow them to finish as soon as possible.

Students wishing to complete the course in less time than the scheduled 8-9 weeks should email me to discuss this and work out an appropriate schedule for course completion.

Grading Criteria: The final course grade will be determined based on the following:

  • Midterm Exam
  • Final Exam
  • Participation
