Course Objective:
This course is designed to give the student an understanding in the ethical standards, issues and situations faced in the counseling profession.

Course Purpose:
This course will look at the need for ethics and ethical standards in counseling for professionals and the clients they serve. This course will make students aware of potential problems and dilemmas in practice, legal issues and differences within the profession between individuals in the counseling field.

Method: Ethics for Social Workers will require:
1. Read assignments
2. E-mail correspondence one on one with the instructor listing:

a - general information about yourself
b - your objective in taking this course
c - your short term and long term goals
3. Message board participation for individual/group questions and discussions
4. Class room (chat room) discussions are also possible if desired
5. Midterm exam - worth 28 points (No essay questions)
6. Final exam - worth 20 points (No essay questions)
7. Final paper on an ethical issue - 20 points

Final Paper:

Paper Value: 20 points

Note: No grade above a D will be given without a paper regardless of points.

Suggestions: Know if your state has licensing for counselors and if there are ethical standards which are applicable to you. States vary in licensing.
