Course Description:
This course will offer a review of the evidence-based treatments for the most prevalent child and adolescent problems. Students will learn about the best treatments for anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, ADHD and disruptive behavior disorders. Students will also be exposed the autistic spectrum disorders, learning abilities, the effects of maltreatment, substance use, and other main disorders in childhood.
Course Objectives:
At the completion of the class, student will be able to:
Complete exams for proficiency, with a minimum of a passing grade.
Learn about the history, epidemiology, onset, course, and outcome of the most common child and adolescent disorders.
Identify models of etiology, assessment methods and treatment approaches of the most prevalent child and adolescent disorders.
Learn about other important issues in childhood such as learning disabilities, physical abuse and neglect, and adolescent conflict and relationship discord.
Understand prevention techniques for at-risk youth.
Identify the best known psychopharmacological interventions for these disorders

Review Emotional and Social Disorders (Depression, Fears and Anxieties).
Week 4: Complete reading assignment: Section IV: Chapter 6, p 411-454.
Review Emotional and Social Disorders (Problems in Social Relationships)
Complete Exam I
Week 7: Complete reading assignment: Section VI: Chapter 11, p 731-777.
Review Children at Risk (Physical Abuse, Neglect, and Sexual Abuse).
Week 8: Complete reading assignment: Section VI: Chapter 12, p 778-811.
Review Problems of Adolescence (Parent-Adolescent Conflict, Relationship Discord, and Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa).

Exams
There will be two exams with multiple choice questions. All questions will come from the reading assignments. Exam I is completed after completion of the fourth week and reading material for that week, and Exam II after week 8 and the final reading material.

90 - 100% A
80 - 89% B
70 - 79% C
60 - 69% D
59% and below Failure
Other Information
Due to security you will need to notify your instructor during "office hours" prior to taking exams so you have access when you are ready to take the test. You are only allowed to take an exam once. There is a "sample exam" you may take to practice marking your answers.
All exams are automatically timed, however I do not time them. So go slowly and read carefully. There are no "trick" questions.
