NH500 - Medical Terminology (2 credits)

Description:
This course will cover terminology used within the health care field, and as may be used within
the scope of the ND degree program. This is a prerequisite course for all non-health care
providers entering into the program.

SC600 - Human Anatomy & Physiology

Description:
This course provides for a rapid exploration of Human Anatomy
& Physiology, theory and concepts. It is a non-laboratory course. Students study Human
Anatomy, especially that which is needed to progress in the ND program, and they study
corresponding physiology. This course provides the foundation by which to begin the study of
Natural Health Care. Students who already have completed college level work in anatomy-physiology,
may be given transfer credits and not required to complete this course..

NH700 - Addictions and Disorders

Description:
This course provides an overview of mental health problems and substance abuse. Utilizing an integrative model, it includes theory, research, and techniques from the substance abuse and general mental health fields. It includes diagnostic categories, and illuminates them with treatment methods tailored for specific mental health problems and substance abuse. In a practical manner, each disorder is presented with assessment procedures, prioritized treatment goals, and a detailed treatment model. Also presented is a grid showing the relationships between certain disorders and the processes of change which have been shown or theorized to be particularly helpful in their treatment.

NH705 - Health & Wellness Promotion and Counseling

Description:
This course introduces students to the current issues related for the need of paradigm shift
from one of disease and illness to one of wellness and prevention. Current trends in preventative
care are examined. Study includes needs analysis for developing prevention programs, the
economics of prevention and wellness, with emphasis on some of the major initiatives such as
smoking cessation, weight loss and control, exercise, self-care modalities, etc. Students will
study the art and science of conducting a wellness counseling session and in producing individual
and group programs for wellness and preventative heath counseling.

NH710 - Aging and the Elderly

Description:
This course will cover issues of aging and the elderly from a psychological,
physical, and psychosocial perspective. We will discuss types of aging,
health lifestyles, and what you can do as a healthcare practitioner to
encourage healthy living. Social aspects of aging will be discussed, as
well. Death and dying are included in the coursework. For this class, you
will be reading a text, reading lectures, taking two exams and writing one
paper.

NH713 - Psychological Assessment

Description:
This course will cover initial aspects of psychological assessment. It is
not a psychological testing class; rather, it covers the initial and most
important aspect of psychological assessment - the clinical interview and
signs of illness and dysfunction. You will learn about psychotic disorders,
mood disorders, personality disorders and traits, brain syndromes, and how to
look for these disorders while interviewing your client. Assessment of
abusive relationships as well as chemical abuse will be discussed, as well.

NH715 - Physical Assessment and Diagnosis

Description:
This is a comprehensive and challenging course in the methodology of taking a full client history
and physical exam and assessment. All body systems are studied and students learn the techniques
and theories of conducting a physical assessment. The works of Dr. Barbara Bates are used in this
course. Facilitation is via text and video tape presentations. This course is equivalent to
courses taught today in medical schools on physical assessment. It is foundational to the study
of naturopathic modalities.

NH720 - Pharmacology

Descripton:
This course will explore the interaction between chemical substances and living tissues.
Students will learn about the responsible use of drug therapy to achieve a positive outcome
and an improved quality of life. Study will include appropriate information regarding the safe
use of drugs, side effects, and drug interactions. Both current traditional therapies as well
as alternative care therapies will be discussed. In addition, a section of the course will
examine psychopharmacology and drug addiction.

NH730 - Modalities for Natural Health Care

Description:
This is a comprehensive introductory course which introduces students to all of the current
modalities used in naturopathic care. Students study the foundational principles of these
modalities a a fore runner to more in-depth study for courses presented later in the program. It allows
students to begin to obtain a broad based understanding of the world of naturopathic care, and
stimulates the students thought and interests in selecting the types of modalities they would
be most interested in offering clients. Study includes such modalities as: acupressure,
acupuncture, reflexology, aromatherapy, counseling, herbology, nutrition therapy, exercise
programs, spiritual dimensions of care, magnet therapy, energy work and healing, and Reiki to
name a few of those which are presented in this course.

NH735 - Pathology & Disease States

Description:
This course focuses on pathology in general and corresponding disease states. Here, students are
presented with the patho-anatomy and patho-physiology of a multitude of acute and chronic
disease states. There is some study of current traditional therapies as well as alternative
care therapies related to these pathology states. Preventative health measures are also
emphasized for the disease states which are examined. Primary disease states which are common
among children are also explored. The role of genetics is discussed, as well as life styles as it
contributes to pathology and disease states.

NH738 - Advanced Nutrition

Description:
This course will focus on nutrition as a science that integrates biochemistry from the cellular level through the integration and regulation of metabolism in the whole organism. The goal of this course is to apply the basic sciences to the study and understanding of the metabolism of macronutrients in the body and how it relates to nutritional health. This course will give students the needed understanding of nutrition at the biochemical and metabolic level so that the information may be applied to clinical nutrition.

This is an introductory course to herbal medicine covering such topics as collection,
preparation and the classification of herbs for medicinal purposes. The use of herbal
preparations in the restoration of health is studied. Specific herbs are studied by their
therapeutic properties.

NH745 - Nutritional Therapeutics

Description:
This course will give you an understanding of the etiology of major disease states and the role of nutrition in the prevention and treatment of them. Students should already have an understanding of the biochemistry of nutrition as well the function and metabolism of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. NH738 - Advanced Nutrition is a prerequisite for this course.

NH757 - Herbology II

Description:
This is an advanced course in herbal medicine covering the medicinal and nutrient value of
specific herbs. This course will focus on the application of individual herbs and herbal
combinations for the treatment of disorders classified by body system. Includes a study of the
major herbs and their application to naturopathic medicine. NH740 - Herbology I is a
prerequisite for this course.

NH760 - Naturopathic Manipulation

Description:
This course will cover the principles, concepts and clinical correlation of manual medicine and
naturopathic manipulation techniques. The role of the musculoskeletal system, the concept of
neurological control in health and disease and structural diagnosis will be studied. The
student will be responsible for the practice of the techniques on sought out clients.

NH765 - Naturopathic Health Care I

Description:
This is a theory based course with some practical applications that focuses on assessments,
naturopathic treatments, and preventative health care related to: the brain and nervous system,
the spinal system, the head, neck, eyes, nose and throat. The definitive care modalities for
the studied body systems are presented, as well as, preventative measures. Modalities may include
homeopathy, herbology, diet and nutrition, manipulations, etc. Focus is on treatment of identifying
pathology and client needs. This course requires students to analyze cases and prescribe alternative
care modalities on fictious and actual clients.

NH767 - Naturopathic Health Care II

Description:
This course continues the exploration from a more clinical focus, including the use of therapeutic
modalities and preventative care approaches for the following systems: the respiratory system,
cardio-vascular system, abdominal system and digestion, obstetric and gynecological systems, and
the male reproductive system. The focus is on treatment of identified pathology and client
needs. This course requires students to analyze cases and prescribe alternative care
modalities on fictious and actual clients.

NH770 - Naturopathic Health Care III

This course is a continuation of the core naturopathic care care courses. It focuses on
therapeutic modalities related to: musculoskeletal system, endocrine system, urinary systems,
emotional and psychological dimensions of man, and the spiritual dimensions of man. Current
treatments related to alternative care of these systems are studied.

NH790 - Advanced Naturopathic Health Care Modalities

Description:
This is an advanced course in naturopathic health care that presents many different modalities
used today in care and treatment. It includes an introduction to Ayuerverdic medicine and care,
the mind-body-spirit connection, energy healing, breath work and meditation therapies,
aromatherapy, and homeopathic treatments. Students learn and explore those modalities and
begin to select modalities that they feel called to use in a naturopathic practice. Again,
cases study analysis is required along with the preparation of care plans for the use of
such modalities in client care. NH765 - Naturopathic Health Care I, NH767 - Naturopathic Health Care II,
and NH770 - Naturopathic Health Care III are prerequisites for this course.

NH795 - The ND Practitioner's Role and Practice Issues

Description:
This course explores the options open to ND graduates for establishing their own practices in
natural health care and alternative therapies. It focuses on the current role of ND's in the
health care systems, issues related to setting up a practice, marketing the practice, and legal
and ethical issues related to naturopathic care. Students are required to conduct research
related to their own particular state in terms of any related legal issues that must be
adhered to in their practices. The ethics of care focuses on basic ethical principles related
to the over-all care plan for clients. NH790 - Advanced Naturopathic Health Care Modalities is a prerequisite for this course.
